Welcome to our research website. This site is about Louise Jopling (1843-1933), painter of portraits, genre and interiors, teacher, author, campaigner and suffragist. The project seeks to document Jopling’s career and to understand the historical context in which she practiced as a leading professional artist in Victorian London and exploited her artistic celebrity in the pursuit of varied social causes. It also sets out to enrich our understanding of the cultural framework for women working in the visual arts in Britain during the late nineteenth century.
This website is currently being updated, including the catalogue of Jopling works which has grown significantly since it was first launched as a work in progress a few years ago. This will take some time but do feel free to check back for updates.
