Louise Jopling: A Research Project
Welcome to our website. This site is about the artist Louise Jopling (1843-1933), painter of portraits, genre and interiors, teacher and suffragist. The aims of the project are to document Jopling's career and to understand the historical context in which she practised as a leading professional artist in Victorian London, who exploited her fashionable celebrity in the pursuit of varied social causes. It is hoped that the study will contribute to our better understanding of the socio-cultural framework for women working in the visual arts during the late nineteenth century.
This website is a work in progress. Please do check back in the future for updates.
